Stanley Hotel Investigation

Investigation Date: November

Event: Darkness Radio/ TAPS Stanley Hotel Event

This events lasted Three nights. Trip to the Stanley was fairly close to Haunt Tech. Leaving just a beautiful trip up the mountain road to the hotel. The weather for colorado during November was unseasonably warm. We did not require jackets at Estes Park, something rare for November. The drive yielded spectacular views of mountains and valleys. Parts of the road stretched right to the edge. A steep ravine reminded us that we were in the mountains. While coming mountains there were areas where the road had a 6% or more incline.

Day 1: Check in

We did not have a Hotel room, something we'd come to regret as the event continued. The first night featured a few presentations, followed by a costume contest and silent auction. We had arrived early at the hotel, which gave us time to meet with people and discuss equipment with several groups. We collected our badges, and found out we were investigating on Day 2, night 1. The night ended with a mad dash down the mountain, and some hair raising adventures as we tried to navigate around ice slicked corners without flying off the road and down the forementioned revines. It was quickly decided that next year when the Stanley event came around that a hotel room was in order.

Day 2: Investigation

We got a late start in the day. By the time we had arrived most of the good lectures were over. We split up. Part of us walked around the hotel to get our bearing, while the other investigators left to grab something to eat. the Tech manager was left to his own devices. He built in the lobby, while explaining some new equipment he had been working on. We had taken the tour of the hotel shortley before any major events happens.

While is why nice to investigate the Stanley hotel we had gotten the sense everything was mad cap. We were put onto a rotation moving about the hotel every 30 minutes. This made the "investigation" feels less like a ghost hunt and more like a highly detailed tour of the hotel grounds. Something I had already done not 20 minutes before the "investigations" While on the tour however We had noted a small event of a metal tag moving without any rhyme or reason. The pipes were checked for vibration, and no air movement was touching the tag (at one point our Tech Manager put his hands around the tag to shield it from air currents. This resulted in the tag still moving after 5 minutes.)

The rest of the hotel was inactive during our investigation on night 1. This despite trying to use provocation. We had experienced all the rooms, and buildings. Tried various techniques, including Frank's Box, Ovilus, and EVP communications. The Tech Manager's new pieces of equipment turned up nothing to note.

Day 3, Night 2:

This was mostly for lectures. In which the Tech manager had drummed up so much personal attentioned he had to give a speech. After all the speeches were done the Tech manager had gone to throw away some of our trash. The Tech manager had forgotten to turn off his new equipment. This accident left us with more questions. As the box was designed to be non reacted to elements happening outside the box. Later we investigated with another group. This gave us our only other paranormal event for the trip. The box going off again in the Bachelor's Library.

The Ovilus

One of the newest items to the ghost hunter's tool box comes from Bill Chapel and Digital Dowsing. Simply called 'The Ovilus'

After doing some quick research on the internet for rants against the Ovilus turned up this Gem:
the truth of the matter is, this is just a toy.  A visit to the Digital Dowsing website will confirm that the device is for entertainment purposes only and has to be taken with a grain of salt.  We recommend that you should steer clear of groups who implement this tool as part of their investigations.

I do wonder how credible a paranormal website is when it has to state that it is indeed credible.  Then spends most of it's time attacking other people out of hand like some native standing on a shoreline throwing javelins at an airplane.

While it is true that Digital Dowsing (on it's website and products) clearly states that this item is for entertainment purposes only. There is a solid reason for this, as the creator of the product goes to great lengths to not claim what comes through on his device. Just because the creator shy's away from making bold claims doesn't mean that the Ovilus isn't an interesting tool. (Yes I said tool not toy)

The Ovilus comes preloaded with 512 words in its internal dictionary. It also has a phonic mode capable of 72 different sounds which forms the basis to any spoken word in the english language. It also has a talking EMF mode, a digital dowsing rod mode, and several others I've neglected to try out. the real selling point to this device is the dictionary mode.

I have been very skeptical of this device, yet I own one.  I have to wonder about how much is purely babble with an occasional relevant word to a question you ask the open air.  The Ovilus uses EMF numbers to choose the word it speaks. The Ovilus will bounce around a few key words, Which I take as the base words for a room. It's not unlike sweeping a room for the base reading of a room then looking for high spikes in EMF.  The problem with this device is the same source where it derives words, EMF. This product is really chatty and that chattiness is very random bouncing from word to word to word with very little Rhyme and reason.

This is were the Ovilus will give you a right hook. You need to pay attention to those words that it spews out. From time to time it will send out a word that does not appear in it's internal list of 512 words. You also need to watch for strings of related words coming from the ovilus. Each word has a random EMF number assigned to it. lowering the possiblity that words can be strung together in an enviroment. Yet it can and will hit those words.

This device has changed my perception on EMF and how humans affect this enviroment. Having used it many times I have had quite a few experiences that have left me scratching my head, wondering if maybe we've been looking at EMF the wrong way all these year. While I'm still not ready to call the Ovilus a standard item for any investigator, it is an item that needs alot more rigorous testing by both skeptics and believers in this field to get a full spectrum of results on this device. Telling people out of hand to steer clear of any group using this device just because it is different is very ignorant.

Franks Box, Ghost box

A Franks box is a sweeping radio scan box that was created by Frank Sumption. His original devices are excellent for spirit communication. At this time it is unknown if Frank himself imparts a bit of psychic power onto the box to make them so strong. Attempts to recreate Frank's original box designs haven't worked (though I might be wrong). also at this time the only way to get an original Frank's box is to be gifted with one by Frank himself. currently none are available for purchase from Frank himself.

While an original Frank's box maybe out of reach a new craze, the ghost box, can be created. While it's not as effective at communication like the Frank's box peopole are getting results from these boxs. Only certain radios can be modded to do ghost box communication, most of those come from Radio Shack.

Haunt Tech

Welcome to HauntTech.
I'll be reviewing and talking about the new technologies coming to the paranormal groups. Technologies ranging from the RadioShack 'Shack Hack' to the Ovilus and beyond.

I hope you enjoy and post new technologies of your own.
